KOSCA Overview

The Korean Society of Criminology in America (KOSCA) is a non-profit, academic organization which pursues scholarly research and professional activities in Korea-related criminology and criminal justice areas. The main goal of the KOSCA is to bring together in one multi-disciplinary society of academics, researchers, policymakers, administrators, and practitioners who are actively engaged in Korea-related research, teaching, and practice. The mission of the KOSCA is to promote comparative research studies, publications, and professional activities in the field of Korea-related criminology and criminal justice. Membership is open to all ASC and ACJS members as well as Koreans and Korean Americans.

안녕하십니까?

재미한인범죄학회 회원 여러분!

재미한인범죄학회 9대 회장으로 봉사하게 된 김혜선입니다. 저명하고 유수한 한인 범죄학자들을 섬기고, 여러분과 함께 앞으로 2년간 KOSCA를 위해 봉사할 수 있게 되어 참으로 영광스럽게 생각합니다.

저희 학회는 현재 현직 교수님들과 석·박사 과정 학생들을 포함하여 약 100여 명의 회원이 함께하고 있습니다. 2009년 창립 이래, 임원진과 회원 여러분의 지속적인 노력으로 꾸준한 성장을 이루어 왔습니다. 또한 American Society of Criminology 내에서 ethnic group을 기반으로 설립된 최초의 학회 중 하나로서, 상당한 인지도를 갖춘 학회로 자리매김하였습니다. 비록 규모는 크지 않을지라도, 그 영향력에 있어서는 매우 의미 있는 단체라 할 수 있습니다.

무엇보다 회원 여러분의 끊임없는 연구 활동, 성과, 및 교육을 통하여 criminal justice 분야에 기여함으로써, 오늘날 재미한인범죄학회의 위상을 세우고, 한인 범죄학자들의 학문적 지위를 공고히 해왔습니다. 제가 회장으로 봉사하는 동안, 선대 임원진들과 여러분들이 이루어 오신 성과를 더욱 빛낼 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠습니다.

특히, 저희 9대 임원진은 (1) 회원 간 소통 및 친목 증진 (2) 한국과의 학술 교류 확대 (3) 재미 한인 사회의 범죄 예방을 주요 우선 과제로 설정하였습니다. 첫째로, 회원 간의 소통과 친목을 강화하기 위하여 모든 학회 행사를 회원 참여 중심으로 운영하고자 합니다. 회원 여러분께서 주체가 되어 서로 소통하고 경험을 나눌 수 있는 KOSCA 행사를 마련할 예정이오니, 많은 관심과 적극적인 참여를 부탁드립니다. 둘째로, 본 학회 회원들의 연구 성과와 학문적 업적을 한국에 체계적으로 소개하고, 나아가 한미 공동연구의 기반을 조성하기 위해 한국의 연구단체 및 학회와 공동 학술대회를 기획하였습니다. 본 공동 학술대회를 한국에서 개최함으로써, 한미 학술 교류가 활성화하는 계기가 되기를 기대합니다. 아울러, 본 학술대회의 프로그램의 일환으로 한국 학생들에게 범죄학 및 관련 분야의 유학을 독려하기 위한 유학 설명회도 함께 준비하고 있습니다. 회원 여러분의 학교도 이 설명회에 참여할 수 있도록 협조해 주신다면 감사하겠습니다. 마지막으로, 재미한인범죄학회는 한인사회의 범죄 예방에 앞장서고자 합니다. 범죄학적 지식과 전문성을 한인사회와 나눔으로써 범죄에 대한 인식을 제고하고, 범죄 예방에 기여하는 것은 한인 범죄학자로서 저희가 수행해야 할 당연한 사명입니다. 이러한 사명에 회원 여러분께서도 함께 해주시길 당부 드립니다.

앞으로 2년간, 저희 임원진이 추진하고자 하는 주요 과제에 회원 여러분의 지속적인 관심과 동참을 부탁드립니다. 회원 여러분의 적극적인 참여와 협력을 통해, 재미한인범죄학회가 한국에는 미국의 연구를 전파하는 학문적 가교 역할을 수행하고, 미국 내에서는 한인사회의 보호와 안전에 앞장서는 단체로 성장해 나가기를 기대합니다.

Dear Members of the Korean Society of Criminology in America (KOSCA),

I am Hyesun Kim, honored to serve as the 9th President of the KOSCA. It is a great privilege to work with esteemed and distinguished Korean criminologists for the next two years in service for the KOSCA.

The KOSCA currently has approximately 100 registered members, including active faculty and graduate students. Since its founding in 2009, the KOSCA has achieved steady growth through the ongoing dedication of its executive board and members. Moreover, as one of the first societies within the American Society of Criminology established on the basis of an ethnic group, the KOSCA has gained significant recognition. While our membership size may be modest, the society’s impact is substantial and meaningful.

The continuous research efforts, scholarly achievements, and professional service of our members in the fields of criminology and criminal justice have greatly contributed to elevating both the reputation of KOSCA and the academic and professional standing of Korean criminologists. During my service, I will make every effort to further highlight and build upon the accomplishments of previous Executive Boards and our members.

In particular, the 9th Executive Board has set the following priorities: (1) strengthening communication and camaraderie among members, (2) expanding academic exchanges with Korea, and (3) promoting crime prevention within the Korean-American community. First, to enhance member communication and camaraderie, all KOSCA events will be organized with a member-centered approach. We plan to host events that allow members to actively engage, interact, and share experiences, and we sincerely encourage your participation and support. Second, to systematically showcase the research achievements and scholarly contributions of our members in Korea, and to lay the foundation for collaborative research between Korea and the United States, we have planned a joint academic conference with Korean research institutions and societies. By holding this conference in Korea, we hope to foster greater academic exchange between the two countries. In addition, as part of the conference program, we are organizing an information session to encourage Korean students to pursue graduate studies in criminology, criminal justice, and related fields. We would greatly appreciate your support in facilitating participation from your institutions. Finally, the KOSCA aims to take a leading role in crime prevention within the Korean-American community. We believe that sharing our criminological knowledge and expertise with the community to raise awareness about crime and contribute to its prevention is a fundamental mission of Korean criminologists. We respectfully ask for your active involvement in this mission.

Over the next two years, I sincerely hope for your continued interest and participation in the initiatives our Executive Board will pursue. With your engagement and collaboration, I hope KOSCA will serve as an academic bridge introducing U.S. research in Korea, while also taking a leading role in protecting and ensuring the safety of the Korean-American community in the United States.
